Wates Group visits Powerday by canal boat
Last week, Wates Group, one of the UK’s largest family-owned construction services and development companies, arrived for a site visit to Powerday’s Old Oak Sidings facility by canal boat.
The visit, to show a client of Wates Group how 100% of their waste would be processed and recovered, provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the potential for transportation of waste-by-water between the two sites.
Rachel Woolliscroft, Head of Sustainability, Wates Group, says: “With both our client’s development and Powerday’s site on the canal, we felt this visit was a great opportunity to show how easy it would be to transport waste between the sites by water. The journey only took an hour providing not only a sustainable, but also a time efficient, transport solution.”
Powerday’s Old Oak Sidings site sits within a 26-mile lock-free section of the Grand Union Canal between Camden and Slough. The company’s wharf can take three 90ft barges at any one time, carrying up to 80 tonnes of waste each.
Last week, Wates Group won Contractor of the Year at the Building Awards 2010.
