Powerday helps increase West London’s recycling rate

Powerday started running trials last month with West London Waste Authority (WLWA) and its waste management contractor Waste Recycling Group (WRG) to process 150 tonnes a week of black bag waste from high rise blocks and other sources within the six West London Boroughs.

The waste is collected from a bulking station in West London and transported to Powerday’s Materials Recycling Facility in nearby Willesden Junction. Here it is processed in an undercover recycling and recovery plant using a combination of technologies including overband magnets, trommels, shredders, eddy currents and high speed optical sorting equipment. Powerday recycles as much material as possible with the remainder being recovered as a renewable fuel. Powerday will report back to WLWA and WRG at the end of the trial giving a comprehensive recycling and recovery performance review.

Simon Little, Sales & Marketing Director of Powerday says, “With our location, processing capacity of 1.6million tonnes and a dedicated team committed to reducing waste to landfill, Powerday is perfectly positioned to help the West London Waste Authority increase its recycling rate and meet its targets. We look forward to a successful trial and hopefully a longstanding relationship.”

Councillor Irwin Van Colle, Chairman of the West London Waste Authority, added, "I1m very pleased to be working with our partners WRG and Powerday on this important trial. The six councils in West London are achieving some of the highest recycling and composting rates in the capital but we all want to divert more waste from landfill. Recycling for some of our residents, particularly those who live in flats, is sometimes difficult due to lack of space for multiple large bins. The trial will help us to evaluate the financial and environmental benefits of using this technology to improve recycling rates for those residents."
